Alterations

Dressmaker

A Dressmaker is a person who makes a garment as for the client’s measurements and client’s designs.

  • Normally the client bring the fabric to the dressmaker or the client could ask the dressmaker to buy the fabric suitable for the garment.
  • There is always an extra cost to the client, if the dressmaker has to buy the fabric.

  • The Dressmaker could give you an estimate on how much it would cost or it could give the full amount right away to the client on making the design garment.
  • The client has to remember the time that it would take to buy the fabric, make a pattern and making the garment to the client’s measurements and how difficulty it may be working with some fabrics. Those are facts to the cost of the garment.
  • There is always a deposit to the dressmaker in order to get started on the garment. Final amount of the garment when it is completed. It is all up to the dressmaker policy.
  • To the client, it is always a great idea to bring a picture of the design or a clothing that you already owned to the dressmaker to copy the style of the garment you want to make.
  • The dressmaker would ask the client to come in for a fitting or few fittings before the garment is completed. The more complicated the garment more likely you need extra fittings.
  • Client should give plenty of time if she needs a garment done for special occasion.

Master Tailor

A Tailor is a person who measures and makes men suits (Jackets, Vests, Pants and shirts). Also a tailor is a person who does alterations to man suits and shirts.

A tailor would measure the man body and customized the suit to the client’s specification.
A tailor should know how the suit should fit in your body.

Jacket:

  • Shoulder pads end at your shoulders.
  • The length of your Jacket should be level to your knuckles when you relax your arms by your sides.
  • Sleeves length should be where the base of your thumbs meet your wrists and half an inch of your shirt should show.

Pants:

  • Pants should be comfortable on your waist.
  • Should have a break in the front. Unless you want to show socks, which it is on style to show socks now.
  • Your thighs shouldn’t feel tight.
  • Keep in mind whenever you sit down you should sit comfortable and no pulling on the seat and crotch area as you are sitting.

Vest:

  • Vest should lie flat on your body, neck and chest.
  • It shouldn’t pass below the belt or the waistband of your pants. It should be at the bottom of the belt not longer or in between the width of the belt or waistband.

Could you do a garment in a rush?

Depending of the garment design and when do you need it by.

Also depending on the rush, if you need the garment in two days maybe not, I have to consider other client(s) ahead of you.

Keep it mind the rush work would cost more.

Do I buy an already made pattern for you to work on my design garment?

Not necessarily, I could do the pattern myself for your garment.

What if my jacket have extra fabric at the neck that come to the shoulders lines rise up both side of the shoulders?

If you have the back of you neck and shoulders rise up with extra fabric sticking out, that is what a tailor called a Squared shoulders. That can be fit by a tailor in alterations.

The pants I am wearing is too big on the legs?

You need a tailor to taper the legs. The tailor would take in on the sides seams of the legs in your pants.

Vest it is too tight on the sides?

Need to let out on the sides.

Could you copy a design from a clothing that I already owned?

Yes, I can. Set up an appointment,  I would measure your body and get started.

What is happening when there is extra fabric on the neck at the back ?

If you have extra fabric on the base of your neck only it is what a tailor called a collar roll. That could be fit by an alteration.

My pants is pulling at the back when I am sitting?

You need more room in the crotch and seat area. Need to lower the crotch.

My vest neck in the front is sticking out?

That happened when you have an athletic chest and the neckline doesn’t lie flat on you.
